Female drummers in Cuba are slowly making their presence felt in an area long seen as a male preserve, partly due to macho attitudes and religious traditions. Today, the island is seeing a boom in female percussionists, including Obini Bata, the country's first all-female bata orchestra, which takes its name from the Yoruban word for woman. Set up in 1994, the group, and many others like it, have led the way for young women in Cuba to take up drumming, and their participation has transformed the art. But the journey for these female drummers has not been easy.
